Visit to Jaguar, Castle Bromwich. A group of NATL members and their guests visited the Jaguar Plant at Castle Bromwich on Thursday 12th May. The visit was supposed to last about 2 hours but our guide took our party all over the plant showing us both production lines. Our tour lasted over 3 hours but the time just flew past. We started off in the Press shop where the panels arrive as a flat pack of square sheets. It travels through a bank of 6 presses where it is shaped and trimmed, pierced and folded into all the shapes of the door, boot lids, bonnets, subframes etc. The only thing missing was the music the robots appeared to be 'dancing' to!! We continued all the way round the line to where the cars are driven on to the rolling road prior to despatch. We saw the seats fitted, the engines and gear boxes matched together, the wheels and tyres fitted......the whole shooting match. We even saw a female technician doing an ultrasonic test on the spot welds for strength and integrity. Not often we witness NDT being carried out on production lines that we visit.
