HELP NEEDED
The Annual Churchyard clean up will be on the Saturday 30th September at 9.30 a.m. The more helpers the merrier, and the quicker we get the work done - - it will be yew tree reducing, strimming, hedge cutting, just to mention 3, will be completed ! Coffee and biscuits ( and maybe cakes ) if I can prevail on one or two ladies. Many thanks to all who have mown the Churchyard throughout the Summer. Tony Frost
CORSCOMBE CHURCH FLOWER AND CLEANING ROTA
Edna Leonard has now handed this task on to Beth Evans and Sallie Else. Thank you Edna for all your hard work over many years of preparing this rota. Beth and Sallie would welcome more offers of help, either to arrange flowers or help with the cleaning, many visitors visit the building and it looks so welcoming if it is clean with lovely flowers. Contact Sallie on 891425 if you are able to give a little time, with enough helpers it is usually only twice a year that you are required. We do also make a special effort to make the Church look beautiful for festivals, Christmas , Easter and Harvest. Extra help for those would be most welcome.
ALBERT HOATH
Thank you very much for
putting the piece in the Chimes for Dad, I would looked after him after Mum died and it wasn't any easy decision for him
to come and live with me but
I like to think that he was happy here. so I now have the trio of black, chocolate and golden. She is certainly
keeping me on my toes and
under my feet! Jill ( Albert's Daughter )
THANK YOU
Our heartfelt thanks to all who helped us celebrate our Golden Wedding in style, both at the Hall and at Lindisfarne, we continued to enjoy visitors and festivities until 1.30 am the next morning. It was a very tired but happy Paula and Colin mooching around on the Sunday.Thelma Crocker from Halstock made two lovely cakes , one sponge, one fruit, iced and delightfully decorated. Betty Dowding and her helpers , as always , provided the delicious buffet. Dizzy provided the music and her and Christina made the lovely floral displays. Marlene was the photographer. Heather and Brian provided teas and coffees. It was a glorious sunny day and we all seemed to have a real happy time - - a day to remember. Better than our Wedding Day, that was appalling weather, heavy rain all day. Thanks to all our friends and relations for the cards (80 in all) and for the gifts (even though we said ' no gifts '). Our friends from the village clubbed together and gave us £50 in National Garden Vouchers - - a brilliant idea as we are now on the third stage of garden improvements - - thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity. In fact ' thank you ' everyone, family and friends for making it so special.

CREAM TEAS AT MILTON 29th July
A successful and enjoyable afternoon, even the weather decided to behave at the last moment. Thank you Celia and Andrew for allowing us to enjoy your lovely garden and facilities. Thanks to all the good cooks for scones and cakes, and to all the helpers. £211 was made and sent to Cancer Care Dorset. Most appropriate as Peter Chase and the family ( who used to live at Milton ) received invaluable help from Cancer Care Dorset when Peter was ill with cancer. Paula
CORSCOMBE AND DISTRICT PLAYERS There will be the A.G.M for Corscombe and District Players at 7.30pm on Sunday 3rd September. After this years disappointing cancellation we need to establish whether we have enough keen budding thespians to make another Pantomime viable. So only, if you are keen and committed, please attend this meeting. It is fun for Autumn evening rehearsals. Contacts : Sue Dowding 891223 Dizzy and John 891845
ARE YOU NEW TO THE VILLAGE ? OR ARE YOU STILL PUTTING YOUR PAPER IN THE GREEN BAGS ?? CORSCOMBE VILLAGE HALL NEEDS YOUR WASTE PAPER. Please take it to the shed in the Village Hall car park. In the past year over £900 has been raised for Village Hall funds. WE WANT newspapers, magazines, junk mail, greetings cards, brochures etc etc. Dull paper, shiny paper all welcome. Local Phone books are just within limits & OK, but please pages only of fat catalogues such as Argos & Bournemouth Yellow Pages. Put the spines in the bin as with their sticky glue they cause problems by sticking to the rollers during pulping. And paper won’t pulp if it’s encased in plastic sleeving!! The usual system is to put the paper in supermarket plastic bags. Don’t tie up as the bags are removed when the paper is transferred to the trailer. The exception for tie up is shredded paper!! PLEASE NO CARDBOARD – this would be like mixing brass with gold - & being paid the brass price!! So please put cardboard in the Council green sacks, but save paper for your Village Hall. In the last 12 months over £900 has been raised without asking anyone for a penny. IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY CONTRIBUTING YOUR WASTE PAPER PLEASE START NOW TARGET FOR THIS YEAR LET’S TOP THE £1000 MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR NEXT CLEARANCE. SAT SEPT 9th 8.30 a.m or please contact 891120/891085 for information on alternative days/times. DIY if trailer on site - please, please follow directions posted inside shed door -thanks. Edna.

CORSCOMBE WALKS It is planned to re - issue the popular Corscombe Walks booklet which is out of print. It includes suggested walks on the ' rights of way ' in the area. Do you have any comments on the previous booklet / routes ? Do you know of any access problems for walkers on local footpaths / bridleways ? Would you like to re - walk and check some of the routes ? Any help would be most appreciated. Contact : Stuart on 01935 891765.
LOCAL HISTORY GROUP We have been disappointed in the lack of support for ' The History Group ' and are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable dates for meetings, for those interested. Freda has done most of the research and had hoped for more support and information from the group. Are any of you interested in getting a group together to walk the local footpaths and bridleways ? Is it worth continuing the History Group Meetings ? Ring Paula 891494 or Freda 891448 only if you are keen . We can then see if there is enough of us to continue .
LYNX LIKE CREATURE Five years ago my friend and I were walking just past Down Farm. We looked over the gate and across the field and saw the silhouette of a long, sleek, cat. It must have been about the size of a lynx and not at all like a domestic cat, we were not close enough to establish the colour, but it did have a long tail ( I understand some lynx's have a shorter tail, but there are several types of lynx. ) About 18 months ago we were walking up the track opposite Knapp Farm ( Ryham's ?) and a wild cat ( dark grey ) sprang out of the right hand hedge crossed the track in front of us, again sleek and long with a tail. This was close to us, but fleeting , Taffy gave chase, it turned growled, hissed and spat at Taffy, and was off. Taffy turned back to me. Then back in November 2005 the same creature ( or similar ) came out of a Gaffer's Farm field crossed the road in front of us and shot into the woods, startling both myself and Taffy. The most recent sighting was 2nd August and oh ! how I wished I had my camera with me because this was the best sighting yet. About 20 yards up ( I think it is called Ryham's Lane ) anyway the track opposite Knapp Farm, there is a gate that leads over to Underhill Farm . I often stand at farm gates with my arms resting on top and just stare at the view and anything in nature. This time I could not believe my eyes, about 30 yards in front of me sat a wild cat , we stared at each other for about 3 minutes, it was obvious that it was not a domestic cat, the ears perched higher on the head and visible hairs coming from the ears to the head, dark / charcoal grey in colour, after three minutes it was startled and ran towards the barn suddenly, I looked at my watch, it was 10 minutes to 10 a. m. As it ran I could see clearly it was long and sleek with a tail flowing straight behind it. So when I got home I rang Jo at Underhill Farm to tell her what I had seen. She said she had been out in the car and drove up the drive about 9-50. I wondered if this is what scared it ! There have been several unusual killings of lambs in the area , not in the way of fox killings but eaten out at the throat - - could this be linked ! There is a book called ' CATS ' written by Merrily Harpur from Maiden Newton, well documenting many sightings.Has anyone else seen this creature ? MOAN
BURNING
RUBBISH AND GARDEN BONFIRES. quickly as possible. Just THINK. Bonfire smoke is as bad as, if not worse than, cigarettes as a source of passive smoking. Wet burning garden rubbish and household plastics and paint can generate cyanides
and
carcinogens. the wind is blowing well, in a direction to take the fumes away from your neighbours! Make sure the pile is totally burned out and no hot embers
remain
(animals and birds love rolling in ashes - I've seen singed sheep! )
