Corscombe First Responders.

Old Reports and News.

March 2006

A quiet month for ‘call-outs’ for the Corscombe Responders, this is what we want, just to be available….’just in case’ .

After another successful ‘Big Breakfast’ on the 28th January we are holding our last one on March 25th before we finish until the Autumn, so watch this space for next date.

Once again our grateful thanks to Jo Vassie for the eggs, Jennifer Gregson for the sausages, Denhay Farms for the bacon, both supplied through Framptons the Butchers in Beaminster, Jeff Male for the hash browns, Christine Garrett for the Raffle and to all our hardworking volunteers for giving up their time to do the cooking, serving, washing up etc and of course to you our ‘diners’. Many thanks.

As an alternative to the Breakfasts we are going to have a ‘Village Market’ on the green opposite the Fox Inn, courtesy of Clive Webb. Anyone in the village or surrounding areas can come and sell any excess vegetables, fruit, flowers, books, gifts etc free of charge…..all we ask is that if you make a decent profit you will make a donation to Corscombe Responders. It will be held on  Saturdays from 10-30am to 1-00pm. We picked the green at the Fox for a very good reason….good beer and food on tap!!

If you are interested in having a stall then please contact Stuart on 01935 891765 for details.

The ‘Open Gardens’ weekend is June 10th and 11th from 2-00pm to 4-30pm and we still need lots of gardens for ‘opening’ on either the Saturday or Sunday or both days. If you would be prepared to ‘Open’ your garden to help us raise money for Responders please contact Stuart on 01935 891765. Now that Spring is here and its time to sort the garden out, don’t forget us….any seedlings or unwanted plants in pots are always welcome for selling on our Plant Stall or for selling at the Village Fete…once again Stuart on 01935 891765.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At long last, Corscombe First Responders have gone ‘live’. We have our specially marked Response car and we have done the Training, what we don’t need now is accidents!! Prevention is better and less painful than cure, but if anything untoward happens then with the training from Dorset Ambulance Trust, we are ready to cope with most medical emergencies in our village before the ambulance arrives. If you would like to join Corscombe First Responders, either as a Trained First Responder or to help raise funds, then please call Stuart on 01935 891765.

Congratulations to Jenny Thorne and Sarah Scannell on successfully passing their tests to become Corscombe First Responders. Welcome to the team.

The First Responders ‘Big Breakfast’ and Mini Christmas Fayre was a great success and the stalls for the mini fayre did good business too. It was really good to see everyone enjoying their hearty, if not so healthy, Big breakfast and chatting to all the other diners and stall holders.

I would like to thank our sponsors; Framptons of Beaminster for the homemade sausages, the bacon from Denhay Farms, the lovely fresh, free range eggs from Jo Vassie at Underhill Farm and the Hash Browns from Jeff Male and mince pies from Helen at 4 Yew tree Farm. It takes the best local products to get the best breakfast and I don’t think anyone who had a breakfast could argue with that…..it was delicious.

I am extremely grateful for all the hard work of the cooks, waiters, waitresses, washer-uppers etc who worked so hard to get everything served quickly and efficiently. Without them we couldn’t hold such a ‘Do’. A special thanks to our young waiter and waitress, Nobby and Lottie Scannell….didn’t they work hard. A thank you to Liz Male who slaved over a hot stove at home to keep us supplied with fresh cooked sausages and hash browns, and to Christine Garrett for her persuasive method of selling the raffle tickets, and to everyone else who helped.

A big thank you to –YOU -, our friends, for coming and supporting us.

It is planned to have another ‘Big breakfast’ on  25th March.

On a more serious note, a few people have been misinformed as to what the First responders are about, so let me explain.

Corscombe First Responders are a group of volunteers who have been trained and approved by the Dorset Ambulance NHS Trust(DAT) and who are only called out by the DAT after they have received a ‘999’ call. We are notified of the emergency ONLY after an Ambulance has been despatched and the DAT consider it is an emergency that we are capable of assisting at in Corscombe or close to Corscombe. If the Responder who receives the call is not happy with type of emergency, they may decline to attend the callout. Responders are not generally expected to attend incidences of injuries caused by fighting or domestic violence but are given the option to attend Road Traffic accidents, which, as you are all aware, we have already attended Emergencies, not just in Corscombe but also in Halstock.

We are NOT  a ‘cut price’ Emergency team replacing the services provided by DAT, we are volunteers to help and assist at emergencies until the professional Paramedics and Ambulance crews arrive to take over. We are there to help not just the ‘patient’ but other family members who may be distressed and fretful, and perhaps help to look after youngsters if parents have to be ‘hospitalised’. Perhaps their pets may need temporary help, anything to help calm and reassure the ‘patient’. We are aware of our limitations but we believe we can make a difference in an emergency!

If you would like to join First Responders not just as a Responder but maybe as a helper with fund raising, then please contact Stuart on 891765 or pass your name and telephone number to any Responder.

More help is desperately needed for fund raising and helping with the 'Breakfasts', if you can spare some of your time please contact Stuart on 891765.

Corscombe Open Gardens.2005

The ‘Open Gardens’ event went off very well with lots of cakes and scones and tons of plants but unfortunately the weather let us down and the visitors didn’t come!! Those who came enjoyed themselves and kept warm drinking tea in the garage or in the gazebos at Lindisfarne.  Click here to view pictures of gardens.

The First Responders would like to thank everyone for their support and help….opening their gardens, baking cakes and scones, helping put up signs, fetching and carrying chairs and tables and all the other little things that needed to happen to make the day a success. And a big thank you to our visitors for being there to support us on the day. Such hardy souls who travelled from Poole and all points in between!! We hoped you enjoyed it despite the weather. At the moment it looks as if we will make over £150-00 profit.

To raise more money to make up for Open Gardens shortfall, the First Responders organised a ‘Cream Teas in the gardens’ at 9 Yew Tree Farm, Corscombe on July 17th  and we thank you for your support as we grossed £155.00. Thanks to Jim Bartos at Corscombe House for sending his RGS visitors to us for tea.

I have been round all the gardens that were ‘open’ and I have compiled a photographic record of what it would have looked like on Sunday had the sun shone. Click here to view pictures of gardens.

Once again our grateful thanks to everyone for their support.

                                                                      Stuart Turner.

First Responders are ready to go live!!

The Corscombe First Responders are ready to go 'live' any day now. We are just waiting for our Emergency Response car to be prepared. The first group of Responders completed their Training on Sunday 12th June, and as can seen in the photographs they enjoyed it.

The group enjoying a joke during training, Dentistry, perhaps? No, clearing an airway!!
